In the wake of protests over elections held in 2009, the government of Iran began blocking access to Facebook and Twitter. Some Iranian government officials use these social media channels, and many citizens access them illegally through virtual private networks and other means, but the official ban remains in place (The Telegraph, Al Jazeera America, International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran).
